Assault

How Much Harm has to be Caused? What Degree of Force is Required?

For a simple assault charge, there is no requirement that any actual harm be sustained and in theory, the slightest degree of force applied to another person without their consent is an assault. Of course, this could lead to absurd results. Over time, courts have defined the content of the offence and each case will depend in its particular facts and circumstances. There will have to be an act which causes another person to apprehend immediate and unlawful violence.
